Protect your skin from the sun even under cloudy skies or in the shade...

People often associate sunburn with beach days—blue skies and sweltering heat. Yet UV (ultraviolet) rays don’t need a big, visible sun to reach your skin. Clouds, the shade of a tree, an umbrella, a covered patio… all of these reduce visible light, but don’t necessarily block UV—especially UVA (the kind that penetrates deeper and contributes to skin aging).

UV: what really matters

  • UVA: present from morning to evening, pass more easily through clouds and glass, and penetrate more deeply.

  • UVB: more variable depending on time of day and season, responsible for most sunburns.

Bottom line: even if you don’t “feel” the sun, your skin can still receive a significant UV dose.

How much UV gets through clouds and shade?

Percentages vary depending on cloud thickness, time of day, latitude, and surrounding surfaces. But here are useful ballpark figures to understand the risk:

Under clouds

  • Lightly cloudy sky: a large portion of UV still gets through.

  • Heavily overcast: UV decreases, but doesn’t disappear.

Practical reference: it’s often estimated that up to about 80–90% of UV can still reach the ground on cloudy days (depending on cloud type).

In the shade (tree, awning, umbrella)

Shade mainly protects from direct sunlight, but not from UV that’s scattered in the atmosphere and reflected off surfaces.

  • Under a tree: depending on foliage density and the environment, a significant amount of UV can still reach you.

  • Under an umbrella or structure: you’re protected from direct rays, but side UV (scattered + reflected) can still be present at 17–50%.

Through certain materials/objects

  • Windows (home/car): they mostly block UVB, but let some UVA through (hence the value of daily protection if you drive a lot or sit near a window).

  • Clothing: protection depends on weave, color, thickness, and moisture (wet fabric protects less). UPF-rated clothing is the most reliable.

The trap: UV-reflecting surfaces

Even in the shade, you can get UV “from below” or “from the sides” due to reflection.

Examples of reflection (ballpark figures):

  • Snow: can reflect up to ~80–90% of UV

  • Sand: ~10–25%

  • Water: ~5–10%

  • Grass: generally lower, ~2–5%, but not zero

  • Concrete: can reflect a noticeable portion (varies with color and texture)

These numbers explain why you can get red under a beach umbrella, or come back from a cloudy hike with sun marks.

Why it matters (even without sunburn)

UV damage isn’t limited to visible sunburn. Even without an obvious burn, some people notice increased redness, a warming sensation, or diffuse discomfort.

  • Premature aging: wrinkles, sagging, pigment spots

  • Weakened skin barrier: more reactive skin, discomfort, dryness

  • Long-term risk: UV contributes to cellular damage

For sensitive skin prone to these reactions, Antidote 03 fits very well into the routine—not as an after-sun product, but as a preventive soothing treatment that helps support daily skin comfort. Its combination of nourishing oils, German chamomile, calendula, and Gatuline® Derma-Sensitive helps calm the skin and strengthen its day-to-day tolerance.

How to protect yourself effectively every day

  • Apply a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen when the UV index is significant, even if the sky is hazy.

  • Reapply, especially if you’re outside for a long time, sweating, or after swimming.

  • Add physical barriers: wide-brim hat, UV-protective sunglasses, covering/UPF clothing.

  • Don’t overestimate shade: at the beach, on snow, near sand, or any light surface, shade isn’t enough.

  • Check the UV index: it’s often more reliable than temperature or how the sky looks.

As a preventive measure

To help reduce UV-related discomfort (warming sensation, redness, reactivity), incorporate Antidote 03 as a preventive soothing treatment, it’s not an after-sun product.

Key takeaways

  • Clouds and shade reduce visible light, but don’t completely block UV rays.

  • Surfaces like snow, sand, and even water reflect UV and increase exposure.

  • Regular sun protection, combined with physical protection, remains the simplest strategy to preserve your skin—summer and winter alike.
